Control Top, Weeping Icon, and Privacy Issues at Union Pool
On Thursday, March 5, 2020, Philadelphia’s Control Top began their joint tour with Weeping Icon in Brooklyn. The AdHoc presented show featured an opening set by Privacy Issues, who are having a tape release show on Friday the 13th. The duo which features Pier on guitar and Liz on drums and PI performed songs from that upcoming tape. Weeping Icon were second and performed tracks from their self titled album that was released back in September. Prior to their set on Thursday night, it had been a while since I was able to see Weeping Icon live and their loud and noisy set made me regret not catching them perform much sooner (I think the last time I saw them was with Protomartyr and Flasher at Music Hall of Williamsburg in 2017).
Over the past year, I’ve managed to catch live sets from Control Top three times and they’re such a wonderful act to see perform live. This was their second headlining show in NYC (they first headlined Mercury Lounge back in August) and their set comprised of songs from their full length album, Convert Contracts with Ali of Control Top singing in the crowd during the title track. She also announced that it had been two years since the release of their single “Type A” and will have another new single coming out within the next week.
Unfortunately, less than 24 hours after this excellent concert took place (Friday, March 6th), the 34th annual SXSW festival was officially canceled due to concerns about the spread of Coronavirus. Both Weeping Icon and Control Top’s joint tour was scheduled to arrive in Austin for SXSW.
Since this unexpected cancellation will be a huge financial loss for these two acts and for many other independent artists who were booked to perform in Austin, please support them by buying their music or other merchandise through their official websites or Bandcamp.
