Quasi at Bat Fangs at TV Eye
On Thursday, March 16, 2023, the duo known as Quasi continued their winter tour with another duo, Bat Fangs, for a sold out show at TV Eye in Ridgewood, NY.
Bat Fangs (guitarist Betsy Wright and drummer Laura King) began the show just before 9PM performing songs from their latest record, Queen of My World, which is out now via Don Giovanni Records. They expanded to a trio by adding Chrissy Tashjian, of Philadelphia’s Thin Lips, joining them on bass. Chrissy revealed that the band were slightly tardy to the stage since they were eating dinner just before the set, not realizing they were scheduled to start at 8:30. The late start didn’t matter as it was wonderful to see the band perform as a tight unit, with Betsy shredding on guitar, just before Quasi.
Quasi are currently on tour until the end of the month for the first time since 2019 when Janet Weiss was in a car accident and underwent surgery and recovery after being injured. It was truly wonderful to see her drumming and singing again in a small room especially as this was my first Quasi show since 2013. Weiss and Sam Coomes, who recently played the same stage as a HITmaker with Jon Spencer, performed songs from their newest record with a fantastic title, Breaking the Balls of History (Sub Pop) along with older material such as “Birds,” “You Fucked Yourself,” and “California” (from Featuring “Birds”), plus a cover of The Breeders’ “Do You Love Me Now?” The band didn’t say much in between songs; Coomes stated that he was fidgety and the duo explained that they wouldn’t do an encore since it’s too awkward, so they continued to play to an enthusiastic and grateful audience until their performance was truly over.
