They Hate Change and sally4 at No Hassle Castle

On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, two acts from Tampa, Florida performed at Brooklyn, NY’s No Hassle Castle: They Hate Change and sally4.

I learned about the show via an Instagram post and immediately RSVP’d even though I had previously purchased a ticket to see Big Joanie’s second headlining show at Union Pool the same night. However, I realized I haven’t had the opportunity to publish photos of THC yet nor have I been to a house show in quite some time, so I changed my plans since I attended the late night Big Joanie show on Monday. THC were originally scheduled to play Thursday night at Market Hotel which I’m unable to attend*, so when I saw that RSVP’s were available, I requested a ticket and later sold my Big Joanie ticket that enabled me to attend a show at No Hassle Castle for the first time.

No Hassle Castle is a loft space in Brooklyn where the performances take place in the living room area, and a cash bar was set up in the kitchen, and skateboarding videos were projected overhead on a wall. There was also an adorable Scottish Fold cat named Prince who graced us with his presence and sniffed my camera bag after I first arrived at 8PM, the time when doors opened. Up first was sally4, an artist whose Bandcamp page is available here, and played lo-fi, alternative music. At first, sally4 started out playing songs on electric guitar but switched to controllers and pedals for the remainder of his set.

I’ve been lucky to catch They Hate Change twice before: the first time was at a free two day festival called Indieplaza at Rockefeller Center in September 2022, and again in February 2023 for a show at a Dr. Martens Store in Herald Square. Their set last night was an extremely intimate affair compared to my other two THC shows with Vonne and Dre performing with each other and occasionally interacting with the audience while rapping. The duo performed three new songs along with older songs, with Vonne joking with the crowd early in their set by declaring “I bet you didn’t think you were coming to a noise show tonight.”

They Hate Change are also performing a Boiler Room set on Saturday at Brooklyn Mirage/Avant Gardner. Tickets are unfortunately sold out but details can be found here.

*the show on Thursday, July 13th at Market Hotel has been postponed so I’m crossing my fingers I don’t have a conflict on the new date.
