Joe Bataan at Union Pool

On Sunday, July 2nd, Joe Bataan performed the first Summer Thunder show at Union Pool of July 2023. He was backed by a full band under the awning of Union Pool’s patio due to the prediction of scattered thunderstorms that afternoon*.

People of all ages filled Union Pool’s backyard area to catch a free performance by the “king of Latin soul.” Before Bataan’s set ended, he remarked that his nearly annual performance at Union Pool is his longest running relationship with a venue in New York City and expressed that he’ll return again next year before selling merchandise and signing autographs for any fans that eagerly waited in line.

Images that I captured from Joe Bataan’s set yesterday can be found in the above gallery. This concert appeared in the New York Times weekend roundup, and was my first time capturing him in ten years.

Union Pool’s Summer Thunder series continues on Sunday, July 9th with a performance by Sister Nancy.

*Joe’s set ended shortly before the thunderstorms hit. I was already home before the rain poured down and we got hit with thunder and lightning around 5PM.
